It’s His Room, Too

A growing trend among homeowners is to have a dedicated “man-room”. This gives a guy space to be messy if he chooses, decorate as he pleases and otherwise display his own unique decorating style (which may include race car posters and beer logo wall mirrors) within the home.

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to have a man-room within their home, and this can leave the man in your house feeling that his taste is not at all important in his own home. As hard as it is, though, it’s important to remember that it’s his room, too! He will likely spend just as much time in the room as you will, so his opinion does matter.

While no one expects you to jump for joy over the addition of a full size replica of his favorite Star Wars character, there are ways to infuse his style without making the room look like it belongs in a bachelor pad.

• Shop Together When shopping for home décor items, bring him along. Again, he lives there, too. He should be included in the decorating decisions. Many husbands won’t really care which piece of metal wall art you choose or what size wall mirror you purchase, but getting their input will help the room be his as much as yours. Also, once he sees displays of how great a well put together room can look, he just might jump on board with you.

• Don’t Laugh at Him! Have you ever seen a couple shopping and the wife is criticizing every suggestion her husband makes? Don’t be that wife! I hate to think how most wives would react if her husband laughed at every decorating suggestion she made! Even though you know his choice of a contemporary wall mirror will look ridiculous in your Victorian themed living room, rational discussion is always better than uncontrolled laughter.

He Might Have Better Taste Than You It’s true! Not all men consider dogs playing poker to be high art. I think it’s fair to say that most men have good taste when it comes to decorating, so your room just might turn out looking better than it would had he not been included in the decision making process.

• Small Concessions If your husband is not one of the men mentioned above, and he thinks that not being able to hang a gigantic poster of race car is proof that you are an unreasonable wife, then you might just need to make some concessions. No, the giant poster isn’t going to fly. Instead, choose smaller items and display them in not-so-prominent areas of the room. No one will even notice, and properly placed items don’t have to interrupt the decor of the room.

If anyone does notice and asks why your antiqued wall mirror is reflecting a small plastic Rambo figurine, just say “It’s his room, too!”
