Designing the Perfect Formal Master Bedroom

Designing the Perfect Formal Master Bedroom

A master bedroom decorated in a formal style is often considered to be a relaxing, luxurious, and beautiful retreat, right in your own home. If you, or you and your partner, need a place to relax and unwind, the formal master bedroom can be the perfect spot. If you don’t have a lot of experience with formal decorating styles, creating your own formal master bedroom might seem to be a bit daunting. However, by simply understanding some of the basic components that go into this overall style, you’ll be able to create a truly spectacular room. Just as is the case when designing any style of bedroom, you’ll have to be prepared to make a few compromises if you share the room with your partner. It’s also important to understand and stick to your decorating budget. Here are some tips that you can use to create your own formal master bedroom.

Simple Designs are Not Always the Best Choice

Although simple geometric figures and clean lines can work great in many rooms of your home, they don’t really have a place in the formal master bedroom. In order to achieve the proper amount of “wow factor,” try focusing on designs and colors that have a lot more pizzazz and sophistication. Once you get started, you’ll find that it can really be a lot of fun to decorate in a more formal decorating style.

Play with Striking Color Contrasts

Although you might think that striking color contrasts are only useful for modern decorating styles, they can actually work quite well in a formal master bedroom. For example, if you are using bold colors such as black or red in the room, you can soften the look a bit by also including white or neutral shades. Dark and bold colors often look great when used on the walls in a formal styled bedroom. Try choosing elegant colors such as purple, red, blue and green. Then, use soft pastel colors or white for the linens and windows to add a soft and inviting touch.

Hardwood Floors or Carpeting - It’s Your Choice

Although carpeting is often the most common flooring choice in a formal master bedroom, hardwood floors are also gaining in popularity. In addition to hardwood flooring options, cork and bamboo can also be good environmentally friendly choices.

Add Elegant Accessories

Beautiful and elegant accessories are a must when decorating a formal master bedroom. If you simply must have a desk or a piece of exercise equipment in the room, hide it behind an elegant screen. Candles can also add a beautiful and romantic touch to the room, and formal styled window treatments can also add to the overall look. If you choose hardwood or bamboo floors, adding a beautiful rug can warm things up a bit. Silks and other opulent materials are good bedding choices, and then accent the walls with items that complement your theme. Wall art stores feature artworks ranging from tropical wall sculptures to metal wall crosses or wine wall sculptures, for example.

Choose the Right Lighting

Good lighting should also be a careful consideration in a formal master bedroom. Lights that can be dimmed will help to create a nice atmosphere in the bedroom. If you prefer a ceiling fan and light combination in the bedroom, be sure to choose one that has an elegant style so that it matches the rest of the room’s decor.
