Designing Your Dorm Room to Express the True “You”

Designing Your Dorm Room to Express the True “You”

Most dorm rooms are small and stuffy and are in dire need of personal decorative touches in order to really create a space where you can feel at home. You must be able to express your own self in the room that you will be spending a lot of time in. You will need various areas of storage, a lot of space in the floor, and many furnishings that are easily tucked away. This is after all, your new home. You will spend a lot of day and night time hours in this space and should make it your very own area.

Look at Your Space

You should take a look at the area that you have to work with and to organize in. You need to consider the need that you have for space. This space will serve as your living area, bedroom, and office. It must meet the majority of your needs with ease and comfort. Choosing furniture that serves many purposes is one way of utilizing the space that you have be allotted. You will also have to consider the other person sharing the space with you. They will have issues and space demands. You must meet them half way in the demands that each of you will have. After the space issues are resolved, you can begin to decorate your new home away from home.

Be Yourself

Due to the amount of time that you will be in this room, you must select a style of decor that will match the personality and needs of yourself. You more than likely will not be allowed to paint or wallpaper the room, so you will have to work with what you have been given. Use pictures, posters, throws, and slipcovers to hide what you do not like. Heavy wall art, like metal art or large restaurant wall art are not good choices because they must be hung with nails or screws, and this is usually not permitted. However, a discount wall art site will carry lightweight posters that can be hung with approved removable adhesives. Colorful items and bedspreads often are also easy ways to showing off your personal style.

Your Study Area

Make your study area as clear and clutter free as you can without losing its functionality. It should express your individuality and personality. You will spend hour upon hour here in this area while in your dorm room and it should reek of comfort and concentration. You may want to use peg board or dry erase board in your room around your desk or study area for keeping the things and reminders that are the most important to you. This is an area of the dorm room that should always invite you to sit and stay awhile as to better improve on your education.
