Decorating a Living Room for Family and Friends

Decorating a Living Room for Family and Friends

Decorating a living room can be quite a challenge, especially if the room is used for entertaining. It is difficult to make the space versatile enough to feel cozy when just a few members of the family are using the space while making it comfortably serve a room full of family and friends. Probably the easiest way to have the living room make the transition from cozy to entertaining is to include some versatile seating options right into the room's design.

Planning the Seating

When looking for furnishings for a living room, consider for a moment how the room will typically be used. For some families, a formal living room may fit their needs, while for other families a more casual family room type of configuration may work better. Regardless of the style of furnishings included in the room, it is important that they can be arranged to suit the current use of the room at any given time. Whether gathering with a group of friends to watch a sports event or hosting a slumber party for a child, seating that can configured as needed is the ideal solution. The problem is, though, what to do with all of that extra furniture when it is not being used.

Multifunctional Furnishings

The answer is to select pieces of furniture that serve double duty as seating as well as storage and other function. It’s also important that such pieces are able to be tucked out of the way when not needed. For example, tuck a bench under a window where it can function on a daily basis somewhat as a window seat would. Have the bench double as storage by giving it a hollow interior and removable top. Then fill it with crafts, games or even cozy blankets. Then when the family is having game night, or kids are lounging and watching television, pull out games, blankets and the bench itself to serve as extra seating. By adding extra cushions to the top of the bench, large pillows can be used on the floor leaving the bench free to be used as either a table or additional seating. In the event that a home does not have enough space for a dedicated guest room, try adding a futon to the living room. This piece of furniture makes a great bed for the occasional overnight stay, and it is a comfortable sofa the rest of the time. Padded ottomans are another piece of extremely versatile furniture.

Portable Seating

When additional seating is needed in a room, remember that folding chairs are a wonderful option. Compact enough to store in a closet when not in use, many of these chairs are cushioned and comfortable. Another option is to bring chairs in from adjoining rooms. For example, the dining room chairs can help to increase seating in the living room when needed, or family room chairs on casters can be wheeled into the living room when needed. Beanbag chairs and floor pillows may also be a good option for younger guests.

Finally, make the room warm and inviting by adding touches of personal style. Online wall art stores have a great selection of framed artwork, modern and traditional metal art, charming wrought iron door toppers, Southwestern wall decor and every imaginable style of artwork to suit any preference.
