It can be easy to add a simple homespun sense of style to the kitchen by simply adding a few handcrafted decorating accents. Even if you don’t think you have a lot of artistic talent, you’ll find it easy to make a few decorative pieces. Here are two country craft ideas that you can use for decorating inspiration in your own home.

Quilted Wall Hangings

Quilted wall hangings can add the perfect decorator touch to almost any country room, including the kitchen. Even if you don’t have much sewing or crafting experience, it can still be easy to make a quilted wall hanging. To make things easier, you can simply start with a purchased printed fabric panel if you are a beginner. Or, if you have a bit more quilting experience, you could choose to cut and piece fabric shapes and squares to create your wall quilt. If you choose to start with a printed fabric panel, you’ll find a wide array of styles to choose from at most craft or fabric stores. When choosing your fabric panel, focus on styles that will blend nicely with the rest of your kitchen’s décor. In addition to the printed fabric panel, you’ll need a piece of fabric to use as a backing for the quilt. You’ll also need a properly sized piece of batting, quilting thread, and a needle. Although you can certainly do the quilting by hand, using a sewing machine can speed up the quilting process.

To begin, place your fabric panel on the work table in a “face-down” position. Place the batting on top. Then place the backing fabric piece “face up” on top of the batting. Use pins to hold this “fabric sandwich” together. Then, flip it over. You can use a needle and thread or your sewing machine to sew through all three layers, thus forming the quilted pattern. You can add a lot of quilting or just a little – it’s your choice. When you’ve achieved the look you like, sew binding around the edges, add hanging loops, and hang on your kitchen wall.

Painted Woven Wood or Wicker Baskets

Baskets can be quite useful in the kitchen for storing various items. You can easily use baskets to store gadgets and utensils, food items or the daily mail, displaying them on open shelves or the kitchen countertop. If you want to add a decorative country touch to your baskets, you can simply paint them. Painting your own baskets is a great way to add a customized look to your kitchen for a fraction of the cost of purchasing baskets that have already been painted. Choose a basket that fits your needs. Then, cover your work area with a plastic cloth or newspaper to protect the surface. You can then use spray paint to cover the basket. Once it has dried, you can decorate the basket with freehand designs or stenciled patterns. Primitive country patterns, barnyard animals or floral designs can all work well in a country kitchen. Add a basket liner in a country or gingham print, display on the counter, and fill with kitchen utensils, vegetables or fruits.
