Creating Warmth with Door Decorating

Door decorating isn’t just for the holidays. Adding small touches to the front or back door can add warmth and welcoming to your entire home. There are numerous methods of decorating your door. What works for you will be as individual as everything else in your home, even if you live in a neighborhood where every door is identical.

Occasionally you may find the perfect wall décor that would actually work well on your front door. This doesn’t happen often, but it can. Sometimes, all we are looking for is something a little more creative than the typical wreath or Welcome sign. We want something unusual but welcoming, something that states that neat people live inside in this door and the general public should want to enter because if they do, they will get a chance to meet the really neat people inside. A wreath does not say this. A Welcome sign does not say this. What does say this long winded sentence in a short but insightful quip is going to be decorative, imaginative, but not so dressed up that it makes a visitor afraid to touch the door knob. Door decorating is, after all, designed for inviting and not scaring your guests away.

There are many door decorations that are perfectly suitable for doors. You can find them in any major line of discount stores and you can find them in the little shops that sell the cute Welcome mats as well. However, you are not looking for run of the mill. You are looking to be an individual.

This is why wall décor can make a great decoration for the door. It will certainly be an unusual piece, and done right, it can make the door much more attractive than the usual hunk of wood with a carved saying printed on it.

Take your time. When you are looking about to find the perfect piece to hang out front, don’t settle. Find out what makes you feel invited and interesting and then go off in search of it.

Of course, if you see the potential in using wall décor as a front door invitational you are going to want to make sure that the piece you choose can stand up to weather. Wrought iron is good for this, as are other pieces made from natural building materials. Cloth, painted pieces, and items that will wilt to shrivel in the elements are not recommended for doors. However, pieces that are built to last can withstand the elements in an entirely new way if you have a storm door. In this case, your basic worry revolves around the sun’s rays and the occasional sprinkle of rain when you are trying to get inside your house in a blustery thunderstorm.

Breaking from traditional door decorating ideas will ultimately create a very personalized and warm look. It is frustrating to find something you absolutely love at the local discount chain store only to find out that three other neighbors in the neighborhood also found it and loved it as much as you did. Being original is fun.
