Creating a Home Office in the Smallest Possible Space

Creating a Home Office in the Smallest Possible Space

There are many apartments and homes that simply do not have enough extra room to accommodate a home office, but even the smallest of spaces may accommodate a low profile computer desk. With many styles available, it is possible to find just the right one to fit any decor. Make sure to consider how the desk area will be used so that along with size, its functionality is spot on.

Small Desk Features

Choosing between landscape metal sculptures or cityscape metal wall decor is a matter of personal taste, but when choosing a small computer desk and space is at a premium, it is important to keep a few things in mind beyond simple style and looks. Choosing a desk that has been designed to work with a computer ensures that the final choice will be versatile and functional; of course, the desk should also fit in with the style of the room. It is possible to find a smaller sized writing desk, but since it is not designed to be used with a computer, it will be more cumbersome to set up with a computer and printer. A writing desk is also too tall for a computer keyboard, making it uncomfortable to use for any period of time. One of the most efficient styles of desk is a small, corner desk designed to fit into the corner of a room. This type of desk actually can feel larger than a regular desk placed along the wall. Depending on the type of work that is being done at the desk, one shape may be preferable to another. When looking at different styles of desks, make sure that they provide enough surface space for any work that will be done on them. For example, it may be necessary to have room for an open book, notebook or manual as well as a computer, so make sure that the desk selected, though small, does have adequate space to function as needed.

Look for Imbedded Storage

Many smaller computer desks also offer a great deal of storage, with built-in drawers and cabinets. These internal spaces are extremely useful when it comes to storing supplies, files and reference materials. By housing files and supplies beneath or above the desk, the tiny footprint of the desk is performing double duty as a work space and a storage space. Many desk hutches come with storage space that is specifically designed for use in an office with places to store books, paper and even a printer. Frequently the hutch also has smaller cubbyholes for CD storage, envelopes and desktop supplies. Using the hutch for storage can go a long way towards keeping the desk's surface space clean and ready for work.

Choosing the Best Style

Many times when the computer desk is relegated to a smaller space, it is because the home is not large enough to have an entire room dedicated to a home office. So if the small computer desk is sharing a room then it may be a good idea to house the entire desk area in an armoire. That way, it is ready for use whenever it is needed, but when not in use, it can be easily closed and neatly tucked away. The armoire is a very stylish way to add a computer desk to a room while still keeping its appearance stylish and neat.
