Big Ideas for Small Spaces

No matter how small your space is, there is likely someone out there who lives in an even smaller space. Case in point: A television show recently featured a woman who lived in an apartment that was only 250 square feet! It was the only apartment she could afford in her New York city neighborhood of choice. A professional decorator showed her how to make the most of her space and the result was a functional and beautiful apartment complete with furniture that is perfect for a small space and wall décor that made the most of every inch.

While you likely have more than 250 square feet to work with, the point is that regardless of the size of your home there are ways to make it both functional and beautiful. Here are some tips.

• Just for You

There are furniture stores that cater specifically to those with tiny spaces. Among the offerings are coffee tables that lift to provide not only interior storage but will act as a dining table when raised. You can find dining room tables that fold almost flat against a wall , beds that will fold and roll into a corner or closet and seating that will slide underneath a specially designed coffee table.

• Try a New Angle

Instead of placing furniture in the same direction as the walls, try placing your sofa and other items at interesting angles. This can create new walkways throughout your space and will give the room a more open feel. Also, if you place the sofa at the right angle in a corner of the room, you can place plastic storage boxes out of sight. Small spaces can always use some extra storage!

• Double Duty

If your space doesn’t have a separate bedroom or if you need space for overnight guests, consider using a futon or daybed as a sofa. This will allow you to have sleeping space (either for yourself or your guests) without having to take up extra space. Whenever possible, find furniture that can serve more than one purpose. One good example is the coffee table that also serves as a dining room table that was mentioned above.

• Lights and Mirrors

The use of light and mirrors can make your space feel larger than it is. If you don’t get a lot of natural light, consider adding recessed lighting. A frameless mirror placed between some candle wall sconces is just one great option for giving your room wall decorations that can make your space appear larger.

However you choose to decorate your small space, utilizing just a few special tricks will help you feel like you are living large!
