There are times when you have to work around less than ideal circumstances in your home. For example, you may have a pink bathtub and tile that make you shudder every time to go into the bathroom. If replacing the tile and tub are not feasible at this time, you’ll be relieved to know that there are some decorating tricks you can use to make the pink seemingly fade away. Tip #1 – Neutralize Neutral colors on the walls can tone down the predominance of pink in your bathroom making it more serene and appealing. A neutral shade of brown works well with a shade of pink that has warm undertones, while gray is a good choice for a cool shade of pink. Tip #2 – Match bathroom accessories to wall color Once you have your neutral wall color in place, use the same color for bathroom accessories, such as the shower curtain, floor mats, wood wall plaques, towels, beautiful wall candle sconces and candles. You could also go a few shades darker in the same color. This preponderance of a neutral color in the bathroom will downplay the impact of pink. Tips #3 – Add a Bold Accent Color Accents in bold or bright colors will also draw attention away from all the pink in the room. Choose a visually conspicuous shade like emerald green or turquoise blue; or, a rich color like eggplant will also draw attention in a subtle fashion. Use the accent color in countertop accessories, like the toothbrush holder and tissue box, as well as in towels and modern wall art. Tip #4 – Make a Color Adjustment The wall color that you choose alongside the pink tub or tile will also make a big difference in the shading and impact of the pink hue. For example, walls painted in rust will mute baby pink to a more soothing shade of salmon pink. Paint chip cards and sample jars can help you pinpoint the shade that will work best. You can also adjust lighting in the room to soften and take away some of the brash overtones of too much pink. Tip #5 – Mix it Up If you take a look at a color wheel, you’ll see that yellow, orange and red are adjacent to pink and combining these colors along with pink will just make the pink look like part of a cheerful, colorful mix. Paint the walls yellow and use the existing pink in wall art, window treatments and towels. Use a pattern instead of solids: Playful mod floral designs or fun polka dots that bring orange, green and red to the mix make the bathroom fun instead of dated. Choose a shower curtain or bath mats that include all the colors to pull everything together. Tip #6 – The Great Cover-Up One way to make the pink go away is to simply cover it up. Choose a shower curtain that goes all the way to the floor and add big plush throw rugs to the floor. Choosing colors that are darker than the pink will create the best outcome. Tip #7 – Create a Focal Point Create a bit of a diversion with a great focal point, such as an ornate wall mirror flanked with dramatic sconces or a beautiful work of wall art that can’t help but be the center of attention. |
