The Pros & Cons of Artificial Leather Furniture

The Pros & Cons of Artificial Leather Furniture

If you are shopping for kitchen wall metal art versus restaurant wall art, the choice is a matter of personal preference and finding what appeals to you from store or wall art site. If you are shopping for new furniture, the decision is more critical because furniture is a sizeable investment. For example, leather furniture has many benefits: It wears well, is easy to keep clean and is beautiful. However, the high price of leather may give you incentive to consider other options. Also, some people prefer to pass on real leather out of compassion for animals. The following tip sheet weighs the pros and cons of artificial leather as opposed to real leather and may be helpful when trying to decide between the two.

Genuine Leather No doubt about it, real leather is a beautiful fabric that lends a sophisticated, luxurious touch to any decor. It is comfortable, sleek and supple with a beautiful patina. Unlike upholstery that requires occasional steam cleaning, leather can be kept clean with a simple damp wiping. Nothing else looks and smells like real leather and as it wears, it acquires a rich buttery patina. However, certain colors, such as white and light colors, can appear discolored over time. If you spend thousands of dollars on leather furniture and it discolors, you’ll be very disappointed, to say the least. In some cases, if leather becomes very discolored, the discoloration can cause it to crack and wear prematurely. However, reconditioning the leather with an appropriate product on a regular basis can deter discoloration and wear. Another thing to keep in mind is that leather can also rip or become nicked by sharp objects, so if you have a young, rambunctious family, investing in leather furniture may be a risk not worth taking.

Artificial Leather Artificial leather comes in a variety of colors and offers easy care at an affordable price. While artificial leather is soft and visually appealing, it does not possess the luxurious quality of real leather. Artificial leather, however, does wear very well, is easy to keep clean with damp wiping, generally does not discolor and does not require reconditioning. It also does not dry out and crack as readily as real leather and since it is much less expensive that real leather, it is a good alternative for boisterous families; if it is damaged, you’re not looking at such a great monetary loss. On the downside, the main disadvantage of artificial leather is that it does not look quite like the real thing, so if you won’t be happy with anything other than the real McCoy, you’ll be disappointed with artificial leather. Even if a piece of furniture is not overly expensive, it’s better not to waste any money on an item that will make you feel dissatisfied every time you enter the room. On the other hand, if you’re happy with the texture and colors available in artificial leather and it is a good choice for your lifestyle, it can be a great choice that will offer many years of service and enjoyment.

In the final analysis, whether you choose artificial or real leather is personal choice that should be based on your budget, your preference and your design objective.
