Add Warmth to a Family Room in Primitive Country Style

Add Warmth to a Family Room in Primitive Country Style

While certain public spaces in the home, such as the living room and dining room, often are decorated in more elegant and formal styles, a family room is the ideal place for a more casual atmosphere that is warm and inviting. Comfort is a primary goal in a family room since it is one of the most used rooms in the home and is an everyday gathering place for family members. Primitive country style decor is a great option for a family room because it is cozy and comforting and the look can be inexpensively achieved.

Colors and Furnishings Black, neutrals and muted colors are staples in a primitive country decor. Bright vivid colors should be avoided because they will look too contemporary. This does not mean that you cannot use color; it just means that you should choose subdued hues such as mustard yellow or brick red instead of bold sunshine yellow or fire engine red. A great primitive look can be achieved with a pale neutral on the walls, such as ivory. Then bring in plenty of black and your choice of muted accent shades such as burgundy or sage green. Artworks with folk art appeal, such as a tree of life wall sculpture, primitive wood wall art or a quilt used as a large wall art are examples of striking choices.

Furniture pieces should be comfortable, especially since family members will spend a lot of time in this room watching TV, conversing, reading, playing games and so on. Primitive furniture is simple in line but it has a country feel and heft. Pull the look together with braided rugs, throw pillows, lanterns and punched tin lamps, as well as primitive style wall decor and accents, such as the following.

The following accents are hallmarks of primitive style.

Dark brown vines covered with burgundy berries can be used in any number of ways. You can find wreaths made of berries and vines that can be hung on a wall or set on a table as a ring for burgundy or dark brown candles. You’ll also find swags made of vines and berries and they are perfect for many uses: Drape them over a railing, weave them through items on a mantle, add them to a window treatment as a valance or twirl them around a black iron lamp.

Country starsare very popular for both interior and exterior decorating in primitive country style. The stars are usually created with a slight off centered design and typically made of weathered metal, pottery or twigs and vines. They can be used as a focal point above a fireplace mantle or smaller stars in groups of three or five can be intermingled together on a wall. They are also popular for hanging on the exterior of a house or on the front door.

Primitive hearts are another staple of country decor and they are perfect for portraying love and the celebration of family ties. Unlike typical hearts that you might see on Valentine’s Day, country hearts are skinny and have a long point at the bottom. They are often made of wood and painted in deep berry red. They often have a curled length of wire at the top for hanging and a charming bow tied from scrap material in a check or plaid pattern.
